Description of the system: The heat coming off the engine from the Maxwell’s digester is used to heat their shop, milk house (washdown water), greenhouse, and even their swimming pool (to 92F!). Thanks to their digester, they save 2-3 cords of wood per year for their shop, and $5-6000 per year for the milk house in fossil fuel savings. In the winter, they sell greens from their greenhouse, as well as early-season tomatoes in the spring. They have maintained traditional manure spreading, largel due to their relatively flat land.

  • 1.75 million kWh of electricity generated per year
  • Cow Power farm generates electricity and creatively uses waste heat for multiple purposes
