Ever since Butler Farms transitioned from a tobacco farm to a hog farm, they have seen their 4,400 open lagoons containing hog manure as an opportunity to transform a source of a potent greenhouse gas into something useful. Butler Farms’ methane fuels a 185-kilowatt engine-generator set where the methane is produced in 2 ambient lagoons that hold about 11.5 million gallons of manure and water. The genset was purchased using a $373,800 North Carolina Green Business Fund grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Energy Office. The Butler Farms project is capable of generating enough electricity to power 30 to 50 homes for a year.
