In 2004, with its tendency towards environmental stewardship, Bos Dairy decided to implement a mixed plug-flow anaerobic digester onsite, in order to reduce the farm’s odor, produce its own high-quality cow bedding, improve its nutrient management practices, and generate renewable electricity from manure. The farm felt that building a digester would lessen the dairy’s impact on the environment and also promote positive relations with their neighbors and community. Due to the farm’s proximity to the interstate, odor reduction was a major driver for the project. The digester was the second of its kind to be built in Fair Oaks, Indiana, and includes 2×350 kW engine gen-sets.
